Darryl Glenn Ellingson

Darryl Glenn Ellingson, age 70, of Berlin, North Dakota, died January 12, 2013.

Darryl was born December 14, 1942 in Edgeley, North Dakota to Glenn and Twila (Nelson) Ellingson. He attended school in Berlin until his senior year when the school closed, and he transferred to Edgeley High School, where he met the love of his life, Maureen Rupp. They both graduated in 1960. Darryl attended North Dakota State School of Science in the Automotive Program for two years. He then moved to Oakes, North Dakota, where he worked for Vern Cliffgard Repair.

He and Maureen were married at Edgeley on September 1, 1962. They made their home in Oakes until 1963, when they moved to Berlin, and Darryl joined his father in the business at Ellingson Standard Service as an auto mechanic. He later took over the family business, and had retired on December 31, 2012.

Darryl was an active member of the Transfiguration Church in Edgeley, serving three terms on the church council. He also served on the Berlin City Council and was Mayor of Berlin for 28 years.

Darryl was delighted to have three sons, and was very proud of each of them. His favorite activities included biking, tubing and swimming with his wife, sons, daughters-in-law and grandchildren. He also enjoyed woodworking, gardening, mowing, and John Deere Garden tractors.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Maureen; sons, Lee (Aime) Ellingson, Jamestown, ND, Shawn (Angela) Ellingson, Fergus Falls, MN, and Aron Ellingson, Minneapolis, MN; two sisters, Diane Freih, Fargo, ND and Glenda (Barry) Townsend, LaMoure; and thirteen grandchildren, Megan, Ryan (Nicole), Nathan, Caleb, Hannah, Lydia, Sophia, Emily and Abigail (children of Lee & Aime); and Joshua, Nicholas, Kaitlyn and Karissa (children of Shawn and Angela). Darryl was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn and Twila.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 from 5:00 to 7:00 with a prayer service starting at 7:00 p.m. at the Catholic Church of the Transfiguration, Edgeley, ND. His funeral mass will be at the church on Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m. with lunch to follow, and then burial at the Berlin Community Cemetery.
